What is Glucosamine?
Glucosamine is an amino sugar that acts especially as a precursor in the glycation of proteins and lipids. Glucosamine is found mainly in arthropod exoskeletons, in fungi cell walls and in many other organisms, being the most abundant monosaccharide.
It is a component of certain glycosaminoglycans, such as hyaluronic acid, which in turn forms part of the extracellular matrix of connective tissue.
In chondrocytes, glucosamine is a substrate for synthesizing glycosaminoglycans secreted to form part of the extracellular matrix of the cartilage or synovial liquid. It is commercially synthesized by hydrolysis of crustaceans in the crystalline form of glucosamine chondroitin or glucosamine sulfate.
Biochemistry of Glucosamine
Glucosamine is made in the form of glucosamine-6-phosphate and is the biochemical precursor of all nitrogen-containing sugars. Specifically, in humans, glucosamine-6-phosphate is synthesized from fructose 6-phosphate and glutamine by glutamine-fructose-6-phosphate transaminase as the first step of the hexamine biosynthesis pathway.
The end-product of this pathway is uridine diphosphate N—acetylglucosamine, which is used for making glycosaminoglycans, glycolipids, and proteoglycans.
